Car Rental

Best for freedom and to explore at your own pace, but be prepared for costly insurance and driving abroad

  • A valid driver’s license from Canada or the U.S. is sufficient; no international permit required.
  • Insurance is mandatory in Mexico and the majority of credit cards DO NOT provide coverage that is accepted there. This means you’ll usually have to purchase the rental company’s insurance, which can be quite expensive.
  • Automatic cars are common, but confirm when booking.
  • At the airport, an in-terminal rental clerk will direct you to a shuttle that takes you across the road to the main rental lot, where you complete paperwork and collect your car.
  • Paperwork takes longer in Mexico than Canada, therefore allow extra time.
  • Parking may be charged at hotels, resorts, and some public areas.

  • Tolls (“cuotas”) are common on major highways; keep cash or a credit card handy.

Private Transfers

For airport pickups, hotel transfers, golf courses, or excursions, private transfers are the most convenient option. We recommend our preferred company for dependable service:

Taxis

Good for short trips or areas without Uber coverage, taxis are widely available and easy to find.

  • You can flag one down on the street in busy areas or go to a taxi stand (found near hotels, plazas, and shopping centers).
  • Ensure to choose a marked, licensed taxi, which are usually red or yellow with a visible taxi sign and license number.
  • Have your destination written so you can show the driver.
  • Fares are usually negotiated upfront or metered in some areas.
  • Always agree on the price before starting your ride.
  • Cash only; small pesos bills are preferred.
  • Rounding up as a tip is appreciated.

At the airport:

  • After you exit the arrivals area, follow signs to the official taxi stand right outside the terminal.
  • You’ll typically pay at a taxi counter or kiosk first, then hand the ticket to your driver.
  • Drivers will assist with luggage and take you to your destination directly.

Ubers

Convenient for city trips and nearby areas, Uber operates throughout Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta, offering a convenient and cashless option.

  • Uber drivers ARE NOT allowed to pick up passengers at the airport terminal area. You may cross the pedestrian bridge (5 min. walk) and call one from across the road.
  • Uber drivers ARE allowed to drop passengers off  at the airport terminal.
  • Ubera may not be available in Punta Mita or some remote resorts.
  • Fares are estimated in the app and slightly cheaper than taxis.
  • Wait times are typically 5–10 minutes in city areas and may be longer in resort zones.
  • Make sure you will have cellphone coverage as you wait for your Uber and to call one to come back to the hotel.
