Car Rental

Renting a car is ideal for travelers who want flexibility to explore at their own pace and reach off-the-beaten-path destinations, but be prepared for costly insurance and driving abroad

  • Rental cars are available at both international airports.
  • A valid driver’s license from Canada or the U.S. is sufficient; no international permit required.
  • Insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica and the majority of credit cards DO NOT provide coverage that is accepted there. This means you’ll usually have to purchase the rental company’s insurance, which can be quite expensive.
  • Automatic cars are common, but confirm when booking.
  • Paperwork takes longer in Costa Rica than Canada, therefore allow extra time.
  • Cash-only Tolls (“cuotas”) are common on major highways; keep local currencies handy.

  • Use GPS or offline maps as cell signal can be unreliable in rural areas.

  • Many roads, especially to Monteverde, Santa Teresa, Nosara, or parts of Guanacaste, can be narrow, steep, and unpaved. Driving here is not recommended for inexperienced drivers.

Taxis

Taxis are convenient for short trips around town, quick airport transfers, or traveling between nearby destinations.

  • You can flag one down on the street in busy areas or go to a taxi stand (found near hotels, plazas, and shopping centers). Many hotels can also call a taxi for you.
  • There are 2 types of taxis:

    • Offical Red taxis: they are regulated and safe
    • Green taxis – slightly more expensive but convenient for travelers arriving at airports
  • Have your destination written so you can show the driver.
  • If the taxi isn't metered, always agree on the price before starting your ride.
  • Cash only; small bills are preferred.
  • Rounding up as a tip is appreciated.
